Your Daily Habits Can Help Prevent Gum Disease

Posted .

Gum disease is a powerful threat to your oral health. Heart disease and throat cancer are linked to gum disease. People with gum disease can also lose teeth. No matter how scary this is, gum disease is one of the most easily preventable diseases adults are currently facing in the United States.

The best way to prevent gum disease is easy: floss your teeth daily.

Flossing cleans plaque and leftover food from the teeth and gum line. If the teeth aren’t properly cleaned, the plaque and food particles can develop hard tartar, which leads to gingivitis.

Proper flossing involves more than just moving a string between the teeth. It involves carefully guiding the floss around all of the base surfaces of your teeth To do this, tie the strings of the floss around your middle fingers and then grip the floss with your thumb and forefingers. This allows you to form a U shape while flossing. Gently bring the floss down between each tooth, all the way to the gum line. Also, be sure to clean behind your rear teeth.
